Surgery Scheduling Queues Help Hospital Reclaim Hours of Operating Room Time

An interesting study - Introducing a reserve waiting list initiative for elective general surgery at a District General Hospital by Vaki Antoniou, Olivia Burke, and Roland Fernandes - demonstrates the profound impact of implementing a "stand-by queue" on the operational efficiency of a surgery facility in Britain.

A district hospital was able to reclaim 11.5 hours lost operating room time in less than 3 months. Operating room time is the most precious commodity costing upwards of $100/min. With surgery backlogs and long waitlists due to the COVID pandemic, a standby cue could be more impactful than ever before.
